Last Day :(

Hey everyone, it's Alex again! So, yesterday (May 22nd) was the last day of class for us Art Speak students. Boohoo. :(  It was a fun last day ending with posting our woodblock paintings on the (de)Appropriation wall and having some strange, but tasty flavors of ice cream.

If you want to check out the the wall, here's the address:
1240 Valencia Street, San Francisco

That's all I had to say, so thanks for reading our blog!

Peace

Book Makin' Fun

Hi there, my name's Kaitlin and I'm an intern at Art Speak. This post is a bit over due, but I'll try my best to recap the past week... Last week was basically our workshop time - working furthermore on our books and trying to get as much done as possible.  Everyone was extremely busy doing their own thang whether it be designing their pages or creating their covers.  For the covers, we have two different options - stitched bound or accordion style.  The stitch cover is made by finding a thick piece of paper, gluing your choice of fabric or designed paper over it, thrusting a few holes on the side of your book, and stitching a piece of thread throughout. The accordion style is pretty self explanatory. It's in the shape of an accordion and two thick pieces of material are placed on the front and the end of the accordion-style book to achieve your cover!  The book that I am still in the process of finishing is a stitch bound style and is filled with many different materials and collages that I associate with my best friends. Why best friends, you ask? Well, my whole concept for my book is to show my appreciation for how much my best friends mean to me. The beginning starts off as me as a child as opposed to my end page, which will be a recent portrayal of myself. In between these two contrasting pages are pages dedicated to my best friends. It shows how each friend has grown with me throughout the years and have helped shape who I have become as a person. That I wouldn't be me if it weren't for them. Basically what I'm trying to say is, they are a part of who I am. Yup, so that's what we did last week at Art Speak!

Goodbye and farewell,
Kaitlin

Endings are not merely endings because they make us wonder about the beginnings

Book_arts_workshop_day_13_009

Hey everyone!

Lillian here. As we get into our final stretch here at Art Speak, all the interns have started to do their own book arts project, as William has probably already described for you guys. For my particular project, I've decided to do a stitch bound book with a more traditional cover. However, though the book will have a conventional guise, its content will not.  I have decided to create a book of endings as a reflection of my own identity and the identities of the people around us. Endings are not merely endings because they make us wonder about the beginnings. On the flip side, when we recognize endings, we immediately feel a connection with the story being told because that very story is apart of us and our identity. And --
Well, for more you'll all have to read my book.

Peace,
Lillian
